I didn't mean to be late; it just happened I never had enough time to get ready, to arrive on time, to be prepared. Time was my enemy and we battled frequently.
I believe, as a whole, we think it takes too much time to get in shape, to live a healthy lifestyle, to work enough to support our families, or to sit down and plan for our future. Shoot, it just takes too long to get through the grocery store once a week! Right?
Well... no. I have learned we actually have all the time that we need.
Here are three key lessons I want to share with you to release all the stress and overwhelm related to time.
Lesson #1: Be clear about what you want to accomplish. When you don't know exactly what you want to accomplish, you can't have a true idea about how long it will take. However, knowing what your goal is gives you a starting point from which to plan what you need to do, assess how long it will take, and what you need to have in order to reach your goal in a timely manner. So whether it's to arrive on time somewhere, have more down-time or lose 10 pounds, know what you want.
Lesson #2: Be realistic about how long a task will take. How many times have you said something like "I'm going to quickly balance my checkbook" only to experience a string of problems that take far too long to fix? Maybe you found a discrepancy in your accounting or realized you forgot to pay a bill. When you are unrealistic (i.e. "quickly") with how long something should take, time seems to shorten. In order to expand time, you need to be practical.
Lesson #3: Plan your steps. Here's another one: You found a great healthy recipe online and decide you are going to whip it together one evening for dinner. When that evening arrives, however, you realize you don't have all the ingredients on hand you thought you did. Or by the time you dash into the kitchen and read the recipe again, you discover you were supposed to marinate something for a few hours first. However, if you take the time to create action steps for this new recipe, you will have all the ingredients beforehand and allow the proper time to complete it.
In essence, once you take to heart the lessons I shared above, you will stop adding too much on your To Do list and putting undue pressure on yourself. You'll be much more at peace and find that you will have way more time than you thought. I promise you will reach your goals and feel good about yourself again!

What Is The Worth Of An Hour Of Your Time?
You probably have attended a couple of training programs on time management where a fast talking consultant taught you about the latest ''strategies and tactics'' on how to manage your time well. Your time training guru must have researched far and wide to ensure nothing, absolutely nothing, was left out. You got to learn about ABC prioritization, MSC scheduling, the keeping of daily ''to-do list''. You got to learn the key dimensions that determine activities: ''urgency'' and ''importance'' as the late Dr. Stephen Covey elaborated in his The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
To ensure the message sunk in, you were exposed to principal time wasting habits such as procrastination and what you should do about it. For added effect, you must have been taught the Pareto Principle and forewarned to always be forearmed against trivial things that don't add much value to your job. To ensure you were one of the top ten best time managers of your generation, you must have read a couple of books on your own, and listened to a copious number of time management tapes, learning along the way how to handle uninvited visitors, unsolicited mails and how to conduct meetings. All you have learnt so far still leaves unanswered the question: WHAT IS THE WORTH OF AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME?
To some, what I am about to reveal will be the epiphany they have been waiting for to take their performance to a whole new level. To others, it will just make them far better at time management than they ever thought was possible. You will gain rapid promotion at your workplace if you apply one tenth of what you are about to learn to your daily routine, and make it the new way you live your life. Even though I have been teaching time management for over twenty years I didn't know back then some of the things I am about to reveal to you now. As a matter of fact, years back, I took the entire management cadre of what is now Unity Bank (then called Habib Bank) on time management. Everyone, from the rank of manager up to managing director attended, paving the way to my status as a time management guru. A few years later, after I joined Diamond Bank, I designed time tracking logs for one of the branches in Apapa, but after a few weeks the logs were abandoned because no one wanted to know how badly s/he managed his or her time. Even back then I didn't have the answer to the question: WHAT IS THE WORTH OF AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME?
Well that may not be entirely correct. I had an answer, but it was the wrong answer. It's the same wrong answer that guides how most organizations allocate their time resources. For instance, a typical work day consists of 8 hours, so if your salary is say $1million per month, viola your hourly rate is approximately $4,166 Naira, which is just another way of saying divide $1million by 30 and then divide the figure you've got by 8. Nothing could be further from the truth, but that is how most people rate their time. They simply divide their monthly pay by the average number of hours they work per month to arrive at their hourly rate. As I said earlier, nothing could be further from the truth. No consulting company like Accenture, KPMG, or PWC would dare do that and that is why they charge sky-high rates for any assignment you contract them to do. Have you ever wondered why top consulting companies are so costly and can be afforded only by the fortune 1,000 companies? It's because they value or rate their time differently. Maybe I'm jumping the gun here so we need to retrace our steps a little back, while still seeking the right answer to the question: WHAT IS THE WORTH OF AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME?
Do you know that there is no such thing as free time? The time you spend (yes that's the right word, because there is a cost to every second), watching Nollywood movies, surfing the net, chatting on Facebook, pinning on Pinterest, tweeting on Twitter, and the like are not spent wisely because you have not been paid for it. In fact, you have robbed yourself, and robbed your life. I don't subscribe to the word waste when it's applied to time because you cannot waste something that you cannot control. If I may ask you, can you store time for use another day? Can you warehouse time and bequeath it to your children, spouse, brothers and sisters? Since time moves only in one direction, philosophers say time is life. When you spend time unwisely, you are living your life unwisely and one day your time will run out and when you look back it will dawn on you that you have been a failure. A failure is anyone that has not used his God-given potentials fully and wisely. Make every minute of your life count. I believe it's for this reason that Dan Kennedy, the information marketing guru, has set his clock in reverse order as a constant reminder to himself how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds he has left on this earth so he can ensure every second counts. One more time, there is no free time unless it is the time you have specifically allocated to a particular activity, and in that case, you should attach a cost to it. It's not free. So ask yourself, how much does spending all my time in church, watching Nollywood movies, and listening to music on iTunes cost me, as you seek the answer to the question: WHAT IS THE WORTH OF AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME?
You will be successful to the extent to which you use your time productively. Since the yardstick for measuring success in a free economy is money in the bank, we can substitute the word wealth for success here. In effect, we can say, you will be wealthy to the extent to which you use your time wisely. Notice that we have introduced the concept ''productive'' in this paragraph. You must know what your productive time is worth and should be worth, otherwise you won't be able to make effective decisions. A recent study of Fortune 500 CEOs estimated that they had between 28 to 38 productive minutes a day. Just 28 to 38 productive minutes a day! Rich Schefren the internet marketing expert defines productive time as ''time devoted strictly to generating income.'' It's like football, or soccer. The only productive time or move in soccer is a shot that results in a goal. The same applies to boxing, and all other sports for that matter. The only productive time in boxing is a punch that knocks down the opponent. As in sports, so it is in business. At this time you might be tempted to ask, what of practice time? Practice time, yes, is not productive time because practice time does not result in cash entering your bank account. Practice time is necessary of course as it is what will toughen the muscle that will lead to that knock-out punch, breathtaking goal or the winning strategy, but it's not productive time. You can equate practice time to maintenance time. It is there, it is necessary, but it is not productive time. That is the way it is. Productive time is time that results in goal, that is, money in the bank. Having followed me up to this point, let me now reveal the answer to the question: WHAT IS THE WORTH OF AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME?
You must understand this concept of the worth of an hour of your time, because it is the only thing that will enable you develop focus and discipline to achieve your financial goal. No matter your age, gender, race and what you do, you need to understand the worth of an hour of your time. Salespeople, bankers, project managers and such like that have huge targets set for them as part of their performance appraisal, particularly need to master the fine points of the worth of one hour of their time. Let's say for an example that your income or deposit or sales target for the year is $10,000,000 and after one quarter, that is three months, you have only managed to make $400,000. It means if you continue at that trend, you will be making just a paltry $1,600,000 at the end of the year, a whopping $8,400,000 short of your target. At this point you do what John Reese, a guru in setting financial goals, recommends you do. John recommends that you multiply your quarterly figure of $400,000 by 4 which result to $1,600,000. You now subtract the $1,600,000 from your goal of $10,000,000, which results in $8,400,000, your shortfall. You now take 10% of the shortfall of $8,400,000, which is $840,000, and add to the $1,600,000, which results to $2,440,000. This amount, $2,440,000 is your new short term goal. To determine the worth of an hour of your time, we need to do some additional calculations, but don't be scared, it's as simple as working through the park.
Since there are a few unknowns, to arrive at the answer to the question: WHAT IS THE WORTH OF AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME?, we need to make some assumptions. Let's assume as follows:
• You wish to make in the next 12 months $10,000,000
• You work 6 days a week 6
• You're self employed so you work 10 hours per day 10
• You work 2 productive hours per day 2
• The number of your productive hours per week is 12
• The number of weeks per year you work is 50
• The number of productive hours you have for the year is 600
• Your target income per hour is $16,666.66
• Divided by 60 you get what you must generate per minute $277.77
An hour of your productive time is therefore worth $16,666.66. What that means is that you have to pull in $33,333.32 per day (remember we have assumed you have only two productive hours per day), six days a week, fifty weeks of the year if you are to meet your financial goal of $10,000,000. The richest people in the world and the most successful professionals calculate their productive time that way and guard it jealously. You hardly find them engaged in frivolities.
From the above example, you will realize that, if you work for only 5 days a week while all other assumptions remain the same, your hourly rate will jumps to $20,000, while your per minute rate will amount to $333.33 meaning you'll have to work far harder. However, the richest people in the world don't just work harder, they work simpler. Some gurus would say that the super rich work smarter, which tends to suggest that the rest of us that are not yet in the league of the super rich work ''dumber''. Well, is dumb not the opposite of smart? Really, they work simpler, that is, they simplify their operations by putting in place systems that make things go almost on auto pilot. These systems rest on three pillars. One: They create systems that create products. Two: They create systems that market products. Three: They create systems that build scale. These three activities, which put together, are all about putting in place systems that make money work for you and not you for money are what gurus refer to as leverage and scalability.

How to Tell If You're Angel Is There - 3 Tips for Feeling Your Angel When You Are Down or Alone
Most of us don't think all that much about our angels, until we find ourselves in need of their help.
In my OWN spiritual coaching practice, the most common question I get is - "if I have a guardian angel... why do I always feel so alone?"
The truth?
From my own ethereal experiences with angels, spirit guides and loved ones who we've lost and have crossed, the reality is, the emotional energy of our personal protectors is ALWAYS close.
But that doesn't mean they can intervene.
It doesn't mean that your angels can "appear" as well, especially in form or physical manifestation, which is what we'd all LIKE to happen when we need some gentle guidance from above.
And while I've certainly had my own fair share of full form angelic encounters... most notably in the form of apparitions of loved ones that led me on this path, the vast majority of angelic encounters, especially when you really NEED them most, require a little bit of effort from you as well.
For example?
Sensation.
Many angelic experiences are reported as sensations, or overwhelming feelings of love, comfort and closeness to someone that you've loved and lost. One of the first people I spoke to years ago when doing my own research into spiritual encounters (after my OWN life changed due to my own) was my very own Grandmother. She told me how several times since my Grandfather had passed... she had literally felt him come into the bed, and wrap his "arms" around her in a warm embrace... something he had often done in real life.
While she never saw him per se... to her, a smart and savvy and somewhat skeptical woman, this was personal proof that his spirit, or emotional energy was ALWAYS around when she needed it most.
Or meditation. I've seen many lives transform through meditation... and one of the very BEST ways to have a personal experience with an angel is through quieting your mind and letting your awareness expand to include all sorts of amazing things that are around you... but that the mind filters out.
Angels, guides, and just the amazing bright, beautiful and BLISSFUL light of the universe are amongst the very best sorts of experiences you can have, and meditation is without a doubt, the best beginners strategy for diving into the divine... right now.
Lastly, ask for help. There are many experienced spiritual teachers, trainers, readers, empaths, mediums and channelers who can help you communicate with your angels, without having to do anything effort wise on your own. Simply being present and aware and letting them "connect" to your energy is often all that is required, and my very first amazing ethereal experience came this way as well!
And when it's time to go back "home", you'll be welcomed with open arms by more "angels" than you can count!

How to Practice Buddhist Vipassana Meditation
About 2,500 years ago, Vipassana Meditation was rediscovered by Gautama Buddha and introduced as the remedy for all suffering and illness. Vipassana has been practiced in many places, including India and as well as places where Buddhism is observed.
Practicing Vipassana is so simple that even a little child can do it. Of course, on the plus side, the little child's mind is not yet adulterated by impure thoughts.
There are several methods to doing this meditation. But before we delve into the specifics, let's look at the broad principles on which this technique is based.
First, Vipassana does not require you to focus hard on something, such as an object (a candle flame, a flower etc). It is a shallow concentration technique where you don't put your focus on one object while the meditation lasts.
Instead, you practice mindfulness by focusing on what is in the present moment. As you'll notice, each moment brings with itself the birth and death of thoughts, sounds, visuals, feelings etc.
One moment, you're making a mental note of the traffic noise outside and other moment you're noticing the itch on your right foot.
Nothing is permanent, and therefore the traffic noise and the itch "die" at some point. They have a birthing moment within the moment just like they have a passing away moment too.
You're job is to observe reality as it is (which is impermanent, unsatisfactory and impersonal). What I mean by this is you notice the object (sound, thoughts, pain, movement etc) and the knower (the mind) which is a faculty that is aware of the noise, pain, thoughts, movement etc.
In other words, there is a knower and there is an object which is known. Both are in constant flux -- there's a rise and fall of each cycle.
It's important to remember that the knower is not you. You are observing both the knower and the object from outside. The knower (also known as nama) is just aware of the object's existence in this moment. The object (also known as rupa) does not have the capacity to "know" -- it just exists.
How to Practice Vipassana Meditation

What Makes People Happy
Have you seen the movie, "In Pursuit of Happyness?"
I have, twice - first in a movie house, then in HBO. Both times, I felt like a pack of hungry dogs was tearing my emotions apart. Human struggle and drama always affect me in ways difficult to understand. But aren't we all?
The movie is a biographical drama of the life of Chris Gardner, a guy who was down and out of luck; who, together with his son, wrangled for a place to stay in the streets of New York while he tried to put back his life.
The movie, released in 2006, was hugely popular resulting to Will Smith's (who played Chris Gardner), nomination for an Oscan Award and a Golden Globe award for Best Actor, with good reason. It showed two things which never fail to touch the human emotional chord.
First: Our love for the underdog;
Second: Our urge to cheer them on to success.
Which Chris Gardner did, after working hard and fighting off difficulties that could have made weaker men give up and give in.
Towards the end, Chris became successful as a stock broker, allowing him to establish his own multi-million dollar brokerage firm.
Is this where people stand up to give the movie (and Chris Gardner) a standing ovation? For most of us, it is.
Most of us take happiness as a by-product of success and success is spelled $UCCE$. Contrary to popular belief, studies, upon studies show that this is never the case. True, money can buy you a lot of things that can make you happy, but happiness does not have a price tag.
According to Dr. Arthur C. Brooks, a professor of Business and Government Policy at the Syracuse University and author of Gross National Happiness: Why Happiness Matters for Americans and How we Can Get more of It," happiness is not about making a lot of money, having a perfect body, of making good grades in school.
After assessing a great amount of data from the best researchers on the subject, Dr. Brooks observed that true happiness lies in traditional values like faith, hard work, marriage, charity and freedom.
Faith, is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11.1)
It is the acceptance of a being, a deity, or a God higher than us, who is the source of love and hope.
Without faith, there can be no hope. And love cannot dwell in the hearts of people who see nothing but gloom and despair.
Unbelievers may scoff at this idea but a General Social Survey done in 2004 showed that 43% of people who have faith said that they were very happy with their lives compared to only 23% of those with no faith. And this figure is irrespective of religious denomination.
Hard work is something alien to young people these days. Thanks to commercialism, they think that success is served in a silver platter without their having to work for it. Well, anything that
comes easy can easily be dispensed with as well, leaving behind a gaping vacuum that needs to be filled over and over again until they realize that real happiness has to be created through the appreciation of one's hard and honest labor.
Studies show that people who are more physically active are happier than those who are not and, most Americans, even those who have become independently wealthy, would like to keep on working as long as they practically can.
Consequently, of the people surveyed who said they are very happy with their lives, 95% also said that they were satisfied with their jobs.
Marriage is the union of two people who love each other and want to make that relationship public, official and permanent.
What was once strictly a union between man and woman, is now simply a union of two people due to increasing clamor for same sex marriages. And its permanence is strongly challenged by the increasing number of marriages ending in a divorce.
Regardless of form or relevance or permanence, it still brings a lot of happiness to people. A study done in 2003 that followed 24,000 people for more than a decade showed a significant increase in happiness after they tied the knot.
Researchers also believe that happy people are more inclined to marry than those who are unhappy and happy marriages have better chances in staying the course, "... For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in healthy and to cherish till death do us part."
A 2007 poll showed the top five factors essential to give happiness to a marriage. These are: sharing household chores, good housing, adequate income, a happy sexual relationship and faithfulness.
Charity is the act of voluntary giving of help, typically money, to those in need. It can be to a person, a religious organization, an institution such as an orphanage or a social club raising funds for a cause.
Numerous studies show that acts of charity and other worthy causes bring substantial happiness to the giver. According to Dr. Brooks, "People who give money to charity are 43% happier than those who don't."
If you want to be happy, give.
Freedom is the power or right to act speak, or think what one wants without hindrance or restraint. It can be political, financial or religious freedom. And people enjoying these freedoms, research shows, are a lot happier than those without.
Freedom, however, should not be construed as a blanket right to think, say or do something outside of the acceptable norms of society upon which it exists. People who go beyond these norms will ultimately run afoul with the law, hurt themselves and their love ones, and lead very lonely and unhappy lives.
We all have the right and obligation to pursue happiness especially in a society where bad news sells, crime is lurking in every street corner, drug addiction is rampant and teenage pregnancies are becoming too common, to name a few. Because to abandon this pursuit leaves future generations with nothing much to hope and live for.

Steps to Relieve Holiday Stress
The holiday season brings additional "To Do's" to an already hectic schedule. It is too easy to forget to put ourselves on that list. What happens to our Ho! Ho! Ho! spirit when we are stressed out with saying yes to EVERYTHING, rather than a few no, no, no's?
Here are a few helpful tips to lower stress while making sure you spend a little time self-caring at this time of the year. Your family will thank you. (Probably not, but at least they won't complain if you are in a better mood.)
1. Take time to ask yourself what this time of the year is really about for you. Sometimes we get so caught up from an unconscious place in trying to make up for our own childhoods that we over-indulge our children and stretch our nerves and pocketbooks to the breaking point.
2. Breathing calms the survival reactive part of your brain that gets overstimulated this time of the year. When we are in that reactive state, everything becomes an emergency. These breathing techniques are helpful in calming the reactive brain and restoring you to the calmer brain:
a. Focused Breathing: this is to me the easiest. You just focus your attention on your breath. You don't attempt to change it just notice it. Just noticing what your body is doing can shift your spinning mind into slowing down.
b. The Four-Seven-Eight breathing: Breath in for a count of four hold for a count of seven and breath out for a count of eight. Do that three times. Check how you are feeling and repeat as needed.
c. Breathe out as much as you can then breathe in for a count of seven and out for a count of seven.
3. Moderate exercise also helps release the day's tensions. I have found yoga to be very helpful to get the kinks out of a stressful day and lift my mood. Even a ten-minute walk can help reduce a bad mood.
4. Spend quiet time (even if it is for five minutes) to shut out all the outer demands and reconnect with your soulful self.
5. A warm bath can work wonders to release muscle tension. Adding an essential oil like lavender or geranium can bring additional soothing to your fear receptive center in the brain (the amygdala).
6. Have your husband or boyfriend give you a good foot rub or go to the Spa and get a pedicure.
7. Get out in nature and get some Vitamin D with sunshine.
8. Take a few moments to feel gratitude for yourself and the love you have for your family and friends. Think about the kind things you have done for others during the year. Don't fail to value and validate this soulful gift of yourself you give all year.
9. For many, this is a religious holiday, so it is important to remember the reason for this season. Let your beliefs inspire you to keep a sense of the sacred and gratitude for this gift.
10. Challenge yourself by giving a gift in a loved one's name to help a family purchase a pig, cow, or sheep to feed and make an income for their families. These steps can help you re-connect to yourself. The one relationship we give the least to and the one that is the most essential to live a productive, loving and soulful life is the one with our self.

Happiness Is Self Expression
Perhaps the times in which we all live, at least in the free western world, are the most self expressive times in which humans have ever lived. With all the social media that is available, a person could express himself or herself endlessly.
One popular social media site has suggested recently that if one were to watch the videos it presently has in store, end to end, it would take more than 1800 years to watch them all. Of course, by the time you finished watching the videos available today, there might be another 1800 years worth uploaded and ready for viewing.
But what's the big deal about self-expression through videos and other social media? Self expression obviously comes from the self. Self expression is part of self actualization. We express what we feel inside. We act out, literally, in this case.
And there comes a time in your life when you are happy within and you feel the need to express that happiness. Please see the word "need." When you are happy within, there is a compulsion to express that happiness in some form. Happiness is self expression.
To express yourself in these circumstances is not a passing impulse or whim. It is a requirement of the well-being of your self. The feelings of well-being and grace are so great within you that you must declare them.
If not, if you do not express them in some form, social media or otherwise, they become bottled up inside. Even if they are positive feelings of happiness, those bottled up feelings can begin to stagnant and depress your well-being. Any feeling that is not acknowledged and then released, negative or positive, can cause a negative pressure on your well-being.
It is as if happiness is a river flowing through you. In order for the river to be fully itself, to flow freely, it must continue to flow. Too little water added to the flow of the river and it may soon dry up and become nothing more than dust-puddles.
Self expression is a need we all have. It keeps life flowing. Some will express themselves in gardening or writing or painting or child rearing. But to keep happiness well and alive within you, you need to convey it by letting it flow through you. You need to self express.
Make happiness a current within and through you to the world in which you live. You will be happier for it. You will be healthier for it. Get to it.

Letting Go of Having to Know
It was an interesting relationship. Years ago we had started with a coaching focus on her professional development, but over time I became more of a mentor. With still more time we entered the spiritual realm of her growth and development, eventually becoming peers and spiritual playmates.
One day, we had a simple but beautiful exchange.
"Are you sure you know where you are going?" she asked with a twinkle of mischief in her eyes.
I replied, "I have never known. But I have been known to think I do."
It was a humbling moment of honesty.
I can recall a number of coaching sessions where I've proposed to clients they should relinquish their insistence on the specific details of their plans and desires. Perhaps the way of things is far more illusive and beyond our knowing. What if it is our specification of the details that stands in the way of the Way, whether you believe it to be Higher Self, the Force, or the Divine? What if the possibilities and potential dwarf our feeble attempts to define our future?
Regardless of such questions and opportunities, our fears govern. We pray with desperation. Or perform visioning exercises with exquisitely crafted detail. Or plan, plan, plan, as if through our efforts we can ensure our desires will manifest. Then we focus our will and action on these, only to often find disappointment awaiting us when our expectations are unrealized.
All the while, the marketers of the world draw us in. Ministers suggest that God wants you to prosper. Book titles propose the realization of your dreams through a simple list of actions. The alternative realms allure with promises that psychic or mystical interventions will deliver you. The self-improvement world beckons with the ideals of self-realization.
At times, it seems the world is a giant carnival filled with barkers of every type, preying on our fears of lack and limitation, catering to our well-intended illusions.
What would it be like to be free of the pursuit? More importantly, how would you feel if you no longer perceived a lack or limitation, if your life were whole and you with it? What then would become of your visions and plans?
Seeing True
Perhaps there is a better way. If I have a destination in mind, I am often disappointed. But without a destination, there is the possibility of surprise, intrigue or delight.
Seeing True in Action
Consider this. Set an aim rather than a goal, a direction in which to head instead of a destination for your arrival. This allows for innovation, adaptation and possibilities rather than constraining them. Instead of details and specifics, hold in your heart the feeling of your desires. Allow that feeling to lead and guide you.

It can be as simple as taking a walk or listening to music. It can be anything that makes you feel good from mediating to napping. Whatever it is that allows you to be alone and do something you enjoy during your day, do it! The rest of the world will be FINE while you take some time for you.

As wonderful as all this new technology is, sometimes it can become overwhelming. Try and limit your intake. Shut the TV off for a while, take a break from your email and don't worry about who is tweeting to you. What You Can Do Now to Feel Happier
Creating more personal happiness in your day to day living is possible. In fact the majority of factors involved in happiness exist not in the external circumstances of your life, as many imagine. Most people assume that happiness is contingent on their work, finances or relationships being in an improved state which can make them feel powerless to take charge of their happiness.
1. The reality is that happiness is an internal state that is not necessarily contingent on the external circumstances of life. Happiness is related to our thoughts, perceptions and beliefs about the external facts of our life and perceptions and thought patterns can be changed. In fact even our tendency to focus on externals is actually a learned habit as well. The good news is that all of these things are without our grasp to change. Here are three small steps you can take immediately to be happier in your daily life. Pay attention to what you are thinking about external events in your life. When something happens in our life we have a choice about how we think about the event. This disposition is based on a pattern and habit of thinking. Some patterns serve our happiness and some do not. Once a pattern is established we tend to let that be our dominant way of thought. Even if we jump into a thought pattern right when something occurs we still have the choice to refine the thought into something that contributes to more happiness rather than creates unhappiness.
Here is an everyday example of what I mean:
You have just saved an additional $500 in your savings. The next week your car needs repairs costing short of $500 dollars-the first thought is I never can get ahead this repair bill is proof of that! Such a thought leaves one feeling fatalistic and hopeless. Instead, choose a better thought, something such as -Isn't it lucky that I had this money right when I needed it! This thoughts dominant feeling that you have experienced protection in these circumstances because you have the resources needed to be well taken care of, even if unexpected expenses surface.
2. Play More. When we are young we spend a great deal of time in play behavior meaning activities that are for fun and recreation rather than related to another purpose. As we age the needs of work and family overshadows any form of regular play, in children play is seen as a necessary method for leaning and development-as we get older we begin to see play as a waste of time. Even adding in 10-20 minutes to do a word puzzle, play a sport, draw or use your creativity in another way, can be enough to experience benefit. You can even use spontaneity to gain the same benefit. Take a new route home from work, stop by a store you have never been too or schedule a new experience in on your weekend can be enough. Adding in regular forms of recreation, even using spontaneity more frequently is far from a waste of time for adults-it helps us to take life and ourselves less seriously while it increases happiness, and enhances our resiliency against stress.
3. Release criticism. Another learned behavior that kills happiness is being critical of others. When we choose to be critical of others it is an attempt to create a false sense of wellbeing. We may be feeling powerless to protect our boundaries in some way or fearful of something, the criticism is used as a means to vent the underlying anger and feel relief from those angry feelings in some way. Although feeling some relief may occur, the problem is that the critical behavior keeps our focus on the external perceived issue, rather than seeing the angry feelings as coming from inside oneself. When it comes down to it only unhappy people tend to be critical of others. And the act of criticism reinforces the unhappiness. If you find yourself being critical of others, it is not too late.
4. Simply stop yourself from continuing down the negative thought trail by saying "no, what I mean to say is: and replace the critical thought with a compassionate one. An example such as: "Although my choice would be different than theirs, I am sure they have their reasons and beliefs which make their choice make sense to them." Doing this changes how we feel in the moment. It also allows us to stop further thoughts and ruminations about the original offending trigger. The more we work on our own internal reactions to our world the happier and freer we become to not let differences of approaches or opinions derail our joy and peace in the moment.
Even with these three small changes you will see a marked improvement in happiness. 1. The reality is that happiness is an internal state that is not necessarily contingent on the external circumstances of life. Happiness is related to our thoughts, perceptions and beliefs about the external facts of our life and perceptions and thought patterns can be changed. In fact even our tendency to focus on externals is actually a learned habit as well. The good news is that all of these things are without our grasp to change. Here are three small steps you can take immediately to be happier in your daily life. Pay attention to what you are thinking about external events in your life. When something happens in our life we have a choice about how we think about the event. This disposition is based on a pattern and habit of thinking. Some patterns serve our happiness and some do not. Once a pattern is established we tend to let that be our dominant way of thought. Even if we jump into a thought pattern right when something occurs we still have the choice to refine the thought into something that contributes to more happiness rather than creates unhappiness.
Here is an everyday example of what I mean:
You have just saved an additional $500 in your savings. The next week your car needs repairs costing short of $500 dollars-the first thought is I never can get ahead this repair bill is proof of that! Such a thought leaves one feeling fatalistic and hopeless. Instead, choose a better thought, something such as -Isn't it lucky that I had this money right when I needed it! This thoughts dominant feeling that you have experienced protection in these circumstances because you have the resources needed to be well taken care of, even if unexpected expenses surface.
2. Play More. When we are young we spend a great deal of time in play behavior meaning activities that are for fun and recreation rather than related to another purpose. As we age the needs of work and family overshadows any form of regular play, in children play is seen as a necessary method for leaning and development-as we get older we begin to see play as a waste of time. Even adding in 10-20 minutes to do a word puzzle, play a sport, draw or use your creativity in another way, can be enough to experience benefit. You can even use spontaneity to gain the same benefit. Take a new route home from work, stop by a store you have never been too or schedule a new experience in on your weekend can be enough. Adding in regular forms of recreation, even using spontaneity more frequently is far from a waste of time for adults-it helps us to take life and ourselves less seriously while it increases happiness, and enhances our resiliency against stress.
3. Release criticism. Another learned behavior that kills happiness is being critical of others. When we choose to be critical of others it is an attempt to create a false sense of wellbeing. We may be feeling powerless to protect our boundaries in some way or fearful of something, the criticism is used as a means to vent the underlying anger and feel relief from those angry feelings in some way. Although feeling some relief may occur, the problem is that the critical behavior keeps our focus on the external perceived issue, rather than seeing the angry feelings as coming from inside oneself. When it comes down to it only unhappy people tend to be critical of others. And the act of criticism reinforces the unhappiness. If you find yourself being critical of others, it is not too late.
4. Simply stop yourself from continuing down the negative thought trail by saying "no, what I mean to say is: and replace the critical thought with a compassionate one. An example such as: "Although my choice would be different than theirs, I am sure they have their reasons and beliefs which make their choice make sense to them." Doing this changes how we feel in the moment. It also allows us to stop further thoughts and ruminations about the original offending trigger. The more we work on our own internal reactions to our world the happier and freer we become to not let differences of approaches or opinions derail our joy and peace in the moment.
Even with these three small changes you will see a marked improvement in happiness. As dog owners, we want our puppy or dog to be healthy, feel secure, and be happy. We do our best to provide the finest food and medical care we can afford. We provide the exercise we think they need. and all the love they can bear. That's wonderful. Nevertheless, most dogs would appreciate four more natural dog needs from us, to secure and happy.
Four Inherent Needs of Your Dog
Leadership
Dogs need leadership. Inherently, they follow the strongest leader. It is the leader's responsibility to provide a sense of order, and security for his or her pack. If you do not provide that leadership, he or she may disregard you, and either step up and fill that role, or follow the dominate dog in the house. Simply put, it is your job to provide fair, firm and consistent leadership.
Canine Companionship
Most dog owners would like to believe they can, and do provide all the companionship their dog wants or needs. It is not always true. Being social, pack oriented animals; most dogs do require canine companionship. Your puppy or dog needs that interaction of rough and tumble playing, and high-energy exercise only another dog can provide.
They also need contact with other dogs, in order to learn the Canine Manners and Etiquette Rule Book, as only another dog can teach. On the plus side for you, by allowing your dog to socialize with other dogs, you give them the opportunity to have fun being a dog. It reinforces your status as their leader, because you decide how rough and how long they play together.
Boundaries
Establishing fair and clear boundaries creates a sense of security. In a pack, there are boundaries each member must respect for peaceful co-existence. Boundaries not only mean a fenced yard, boundaries include providing simple, clear rules of the house. To make it easier for your dog to learn the rules, and respect your boundaries, everyone in the house must be fair, firm, and consistent.
Simply put, if the house rule is no dogs on the furniture, everyone follows that rule. The same holds true for no feeding the dog from the table. Or, not allowing your dog to jump on people. Like water, dogs follow the path of least resistance. When the family is consistent with the rules, your dog figures why bother testing the rules. When not everyone is consistent, you will be constantly tested.
Scheduled Routines
Dogs in households with established well-followed scheduled routines, feel the most secure. They quickly learn your routines and conform to your schedule, but you have to be fair to your pets. A discombobulated household, with little or no scheduled routines is unfair to your pet. It is unreasonable to expect them to accommodate us with appropriate behaviors, if we don't provide them with an expected routine.
Chaos confuses most dogs. Don't make it more difficult for your pet to learn appropriate behaviors, such as housebreaking, if there is no schedule. If your dog is not fed on schedule, or let outside to relieve his or herself because you have no scheduled routine, don't be surprised when you find a surprise! Don't blame your dog. It's your responsibility to have a feeding and relieving schedule. When a dog's daily routine is on a schedule, they will learn it. Then, life is good!
Bottom line: Add these four simple inherent needs to your dog's life, leadership, canine companionship, boundaries, and scheduled routines. Then, watch the difference in your puppy or dog! They will feel more secure, much happier, and better behaved! It can't get any better than that!

Understanding Human Nature - The Key To Effective Communication
How often have you personally wondered, or overheard someone else pondering the key components of successful, effective and meaningful communication? While perfecting communication skills undoubtedly encompasses numerous aspects and acquired traits/ knowledge, unless it begins with a clearcut focus on enhancing one's abilities and skills in terms of understanding human nature, there can be no way to effectively communicate. One of the most famous and successful life insurance salespersons of all times, Ben Feldman, insisted that success in any type of interpersonal sales required only about one percent technical knowledge, while requiring ninety nine percent understanding human nature. How can anyone effectively communicate his message if he lacks the ability to appreciate and understand the perspective, needs, nuances and preferences of others? The reality is that best salespersons, leaders, managers, etc., invariably are those that realize that the probability of getting one's message across necessitates effectively communicating, and that requires proactively seeking out learning as much as possible about human nature.
1. What does understanding human nature actually mean? In the vast majority of situations, it requires proactivity rather than passive behavior, because one must use many of his senses, including his sight, hearing, etc., and pay attention to how others behave and act, and why. For example, the most successful salesperson is generally the one that finds his potential buyer's "hot button" and focuses on how the service and/ or product will improve something for the buyer. Understanding human nature means that the discussion must encompass needs, and unless one is willing and able to understand the various nuances, preferences, and even quirks, his ability to effectively communicate is limited and even diminished.
2. It is important to understand that others are generally far more interested, and therefore potentially motivated to action, when the discussion is about them, and their needs. Great communicators invariably discuss issues and ideas in terms of how they impact and serve others, and not merely in terms of services offered. Most people need to know how something impacts and effects them, and why, rather than merely being told about services provided. In order to do so, the priority must be placed on getting a better idea and understanding of human nature.
Great communicators invariably are those that prioritize participatory discussions, because once you get others to participate, you learn far more about them. A two way discussion is true communication, while merely making a statement without participation is talking at, rather than the necessary speaking to, one's potential audience.

The 10 Habits of Happiness
How happy do you want to be? How happy will you allow yourself to be?
The beautiful and surprising thing is that we are mostly in charge of our own happiness: only 15% of our happiness depends on external events, according to studies. So the first happiness habit is to decide to be happy and then to work out what YOU need to do to get there.
14 years of successfully coaching people to get happier, more fulfilled, and fundamentally more delighted with their lives and their work has helped me come up with this list of the top 10 happiness habits that make all the difference:
1. Big picture: consider when you've been happiest so far and what makes you light up. If you imagine your happiest life, your most fulfilling work, what would it look like? Create your personal vision, write it down, illustrate it. Use it to create your own road-map and plan for the next year. See my book for more details on how to create your own vision day to help you do this.
2. Your perfect day: imagine (not Lou Reed!) what your dream day might look like from start to finish, from breakfast to bedtime... make it specific... then plan a day to live it sometime soon. Why not? YOLO (you only live once!), as my teenage son is fond of saying!
3. Only connect: consider which of your friends and family members most inspire you, and make sure to reach out to at least one of these people each day for a chat on the phone, or to plan a get-together.
4. Give: it makes us happy to make a difference, so make sure that each week includes some volunteer work, even for an hour, or simply try to help everyone you can at every opportunity in whatever way, even stopping to help a lost person with directions counts! Emerson tells us that the purpose of life "is not to simply be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have made some difference that you have lived and lived well." Thing is, living that way makes us happy!
5. Appreciate: here's a promise. If you try this happiness experiment every day for the next 2 weeks, you will be happier at the end of it! Every evening, come up with 5 things that you're grateful for, anything from seeing a rainbow, to a bright blue sky on a sunny cold day, to a great cup of coffee. Doing this will retrain your brain to notice and enjoy all the good things, rather than focusing on the negative, which is our natural default position.
6. Exercise: if you jog, you know how amazing you feel when you get back from running? It's a high! Apart from the physical fitness benefits you feel amazing (and virtuous). Take the time to exercise in a way you enjoy 4-5 times a week for 30 minutes and you'll find your increased energy and feel-good factor will help you work more creatively and efficiently and just feel better generally.
7. Tune in to the "the better angels of our nature," as Abraham Lincoln says. Look for the best in yourself and in others and expect that too. You'll find that if you live your highest values, you also activate your highest potential. And that if you believe in others and show them this, that they will usually (not always, sadly!) live up to your expectations.
8. Think pink! Watch your thoughts... is your self-talk positive or negative? Our natural default position is to focus on the negative, which works as a kind of self-hypnosis. Each time you have a negative thought, train yourself to turn it around, asking yourself how you can see the situation more constructively: what's the opportunity within the crisis? Each time you do that, you create a stronger habit of positive thinking which is empowering and uplifting. It takes time, but definitely worth it!
9. Clear up! Clean up your diet (try juicing & creating green smoothies for breakfast), your clutter around the house, your emotional clutter. One day at a time! You will feel your energy and happiness levels rise dramatically if you chart your progress.
10. Have fun! What inspires you? What energises you? Beauty? Adventure? Creativity? Identify your top values and reflect them in your life every day in your activities. Be open to seizing opportunities for fun whenever you see them. As I'm writing this, I just looked out my window and saw a rather spectacular colourful hot-air balloon soaring across the Bath skyline. I might have missed it if I hadn't been open to it.
Raise your happiness set-point! Research shows that we all have a natural set point for happiness, which we will revert to after temporary dips or spikes due to external events.
But you can raise your happiness set-point by deliberately cultivating your happiness with these habits!
